"US appeals ruling on gay Air Force officer but does not seek to bar reinstatement" Major Witt can return to active duty
A USAF flight nurse appears set to return to active duty after her dismissal appeal procedures go through the courts since the government did not ask for a stay when it lost a decision. She has to pass professional and physical qualification tests for reinstatement that will be no problem.
I'm glad to see this happening with the administration seeking to end DADT and Congress looking at the necessary legal means. DADT has been set aside by a federal judge recently.
NSA has had a gay and lesbian club for some time. When James Bamford went to NSA almost a decade ago for a book signing when his "Body of Secrets" came out, the news article I read described the existence of this organisation. If NSA can do this, anyone can.
Not generally known Martin & Mitchell defected to the USSR in September 1960 causing huge damage to the US intelligence effort. http://bit.ly/ia3kN1 They had been in the US Navy's Naval Security Group (NSG) serving together in Japan 1951-4 and joined NSA at the same time in 1957.
Open acceptance of gay and lesbian oriented people might have saved US national security at an especially critical time during the Cold War.
"A secret 1963 NSA study said that "Beyond any doubt, no other event has had, or is likely to have in the future, a greater impact on the Agency's security program." ever."
I served as an analyst in the USAF Security Service from 1961 to 1964 from the time the Berlin Wall went up through the Cuban Missile crisis and JFK's assassination to the election of LBJ as president. My work had been directly effected by the defection of Martin and Mitchell.
